Towards Worldwide Security: Building the Transatlantic Agenda

An international conference organised by the EastWest Institute in partnership with the New Defence Agenda and the Belgian Royal Institute for International Relations (IRRI) co-initiated by Brinks and Entrust and with the support of Boeing, Baxter, The Financial Times, Unisys and the US Mission to the European Union. Held 17 November, Palais d'Egmont, Brussels.

Press Dinner with Erkki Liikanen, European Commissioner for Enterprise and Information Society

Speaking at the New Defence Agenda’s November 12 press dinner, Commissioner Erkki Liikanen stressed the advantages of developing a European Defence Equipment market and stimulating cooperation on security and defence related research. He argued a stong case for bringing those benefits to the defence and security sectors. Identifying the opportunities for efficiencies to be brought to the European defence marketplace, Commissioner Liikanen highlighted the promising potential role for the proposed European Defence Agency.

Press Dinner with General James L. Jones, NATO's Supreme Allied Commander

At the 16 October dinner hosted by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander, General James L. Jones, stated that the alliance has gone from being a static defensive force to one that is now truly global and transformational. The General emphasised his point by naming NATO’s geo-political centre as being the Greater and Middle East.

The fifth session of the Defence-led R&D and Industrial Innovation working group looked at two strategic issues: the working of the proposed European Defence Agency and the future of warfare itself.

European Capabilities and Security Aims

At the fifth session of the European Capabilities and Security Aims working group, it was agreed that the Headline Goal would be met in quantitative terms by year end. Serious concerns remained however, in the key areas of availability; mobility, intra-operability and sustainability.
