EU, NATO officials call for gender equality
Reuters Global News Journal - Monday, February 01, 2010

"European Union and NATO officials have joined forces in calling for new efforts to ensure women are more involved in peacekeeping and conflict resolution. But differences remain on how to do so, and on whether gender quotas are the solution. Officials told a meeting in Brussels on Wednesday that women were not represented sufficiently in policymaking and that impunity for crimes against women remained a problem, despite United Nations resolutions that are supposed to address such issues."

“This is not a women’s issue, but it’s a human rights issue,” said Margot Wallstrom, vice president of the European Union executive, the European Commission. “And I’ve come to realise that the security of a nation is best measured by the security of its women.”

"But there was no consensus when Wallstrom raised the idea of introducing quotas for women to help bring political gender parity. NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen proposed gender targets as an alternative."

EU, NATO join forces to make women actors of peace, security
Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) - Monday, February 01, 2010

The European Union and NATO organised a high-level conference on women, peace and security here Wednesday to raise awareness of the upcoming 10th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security.

The participants concluded that all EU and NATO-led operations must comply with UN resolutions relating to women, peace and security, and must be supported by appropriate training, education, and monitoring mechanisms.

"I have come to realise that the security of women is the best indicator of the security of a nation. Unless we enhance the rights and responsibilities of women globally, our foreign policy goals will remain unachievable," said Margot Wallstrom, Vice-President of the European Commission to the large audience of 400 particpants.

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said "we must empower women and confront victimisation if we are to deal successfully with the security challenges of the 21st century." "This is a task not only for NATO, but a challenge that the Alliance, the European Union, and civil society actors must address jointly," he added. (end) nk.bs KUNA 280018 Jan 10NNNN
