With the upcoming 10th anniversary of UN resolution 1325* and the adoption last September of UN resolution 1888**, political momentum is key for addressing the issue of women, peace and security strategically and coherently.

as they convene a variety of actors: witnesses and NGOs, civilians and military officers in the field, and top-level policymakers to discuss concrete steps towards better protection and empowerment of women in conflict areas and improving gender mainstreaming of foreign operations.

The event will be used to endorse recommendations on how to protect women in conflict and ensure their participation in building peace.

The gathering will also serve as an:

  • Awareness raising event – hear testimonies from Afghanistan, DR Congo and individuals working to empower women in conflict areas
  • Solutions-exercise for developing practical steps for the international community to better protect women in conflict situations and ensure their includsion in the peace building process
  • Occasion for commitment from military officials at the highest level whose support is essential in formulating strategies to stop the use of violence as a tool in conflict areas
  • Dialogue opportunity between a mix of actors involved – from witnesses on the ground, to peacekeepers & practitioners, military officials and politicians
