US and Pakistan reanimate military ties

US and Pakistani military leaders met on the weekend in an attempt to improve ties between the two countries, which have been strained by the US killing of Al-Qaeida leader Osama Bin Laden in May 2011. Pentagon spokesman Captain John Kirby said that US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mike Mullen and his Pakistani counterpart General Ashfaq Kayani “agreed that the relationship between our two countries remained vital to the region …”

Increased Russian-Iranian nuclear Cooperation
Russia is seeking to extend its nuclear cooperation with Iran, said Russian energy minister Sergei Shmatko yesterday. With regard to the first Iranian atomic power plant built with Russian support, the minister said: “I say with certainty that in the future, we will have more cooperation in the Bushehr power plant, and also in the development of other projects in the field of nuclear energy.”

SDA CONFERENCE – SHAPING NATO’s reform agenda
On June 29 the Security & Defence Agenda organised an international conference entitled “Shaping NATO’s reform agenda” with the support of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, NATO, Lockheed Martin, IBM, the Atlantic Council and the Euro-Atlantic association of Belgium. The discussions focused on the current challenges facing NATO such as national defence cuts, missile defence policy and future strategic capabilities.
