Cyberspace has permeated nearly all aspects of modern life and is expanding rapidly as tens of millions of people (and hundreds of millions of devices) go online each year. In the space of two decades our world has been revolutionised by information and communications technology. The opportunities and challenges are immense, and the scale and pace of change are unlike anything that has been experienced before.
However, lacking a model to adequately explain this environment, analysis tends to rely on metaphor and analogy. New ways of thinking are needed to deal with important questions such as:
-
What role should governments and governance play in the regulation of cyberspace?
-
How can security concerns be balanced with privacy rights?
-
How can public-private cooperation enhance national and international efforts to increase security?
-
What manifestations do crime, espionage and conflict have in cyberspace and what are the implications for the well being of society?
The Security Jam and Chatham House invite contributors to assess the landscape of cyberspace, to analyse current trends and challenges and to debate how this growing arena of security might be managed more effectively.
