NATO urges Georgia to deepen reforms

NATO is pressing Georgia to step up its political and military reforms to enable faster accession into the alliance. NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen praised Georgia’s current reform process and their contributions to the mission in Afghanistan of 900 troops.

The UK’s Strategic Security and Defence Review (SDSR) may have to be revisited and plans curtailed, says Jon Thompson, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Defence. Thompson told the Public Accounts Committee that there is a risk that funding could be reduced.

De Maizière rejects idea of EU army
The German Minister of Defence Thomas de Maizière has dismissed calls for the creation of an EU army in a speech at the annual Munich Security Conference. Instead he urged the EU and NATO to find ways to improve their cooperation.

Australia and UK sign new defence treaty
A new defence treaty was signed on the 17th January between Australia and the UK during a visit to Perth by British Defence Secretary Phillip Hammond for the annual Australian-British ministerial talks. Hammond, who deemed the treaty “a statement of intent” from both countries, said “for us the big benefit is Australia's footprint in the Asia-Pacific with a country that is a trusted friend in a region that has become much more important to us.”
