China launches space mission

China successfully launched an unmanned spacecraft Tuesday morning to carry out the country’s first space docking mission as part of ambitious plans for a manned space programme. The Shenzhou 8 was launched at dawn from the northern Gobi desert, entering orbit successfully, and is due to dock with the Tiangong 1 module by Thursday more than 200 miles above Earth.

A new partnership for European Security

On 10th of February 2011, the Security and Defence Agenda (SDA) and the European Organisation for Security (EOS) organised a conference to discuss the future of European security. The conference welcomed more than 20 speakers and 200 participants from both sides of the public-private divide. The debates centered on the implementation of the European Internal Security Strategy focusing on four principle areas: border security, disaster control and civil protection, cybersecurity and transport security.

Restrictions for F-22 ordered
The US Department of Defence has issued further safety procedures for its most advanced fighter jet F-22 after pilots complained of oxygen shortages during the flights and refused to fly the aircraft despite the assurance of Air Force leaders that the plane is safe.

New air defence radar to be tested
The new advanced long-ranged radar system is to be tested by the US Navy later this year. The Joint Land Attack Cruise Missile Defence Elevated Netted Sensor System, JLENS, is specifically designed to track and defeat small low-flying targets like land attack cruise missiles.
