US Navy gets budget priority

The US Navy's shipbuilding programme has been given budget priority and will not be cut to meet the Pentagon’s $263 billion reduction in defence spending by 2013.

NATO's European Dimension

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen headed a high-level panel discussed the future of the Alliance, the implications of the financial crisis on the defence sector and the way ahead in Afghanistan.
"NATO's European Dimension" was organised with Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, and was attended by 500 particpants. .

The new global security landscape: 10 Recommendations from the 2010 Security Jam

During this innovative online experiment, leading think-tanks got together with the SDA to organise a 5-day brainstorm that was supported by NATO and the EU. The recommendations that emerged from this brainstorming event have been sent around the world.

NATO, the credit crunch and the new security environment

In December 2009 the Security & Defence Agenda organised an international conference “NATO, the credit crunch and the new security environment” with the support of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, Hewlett Packard, Lockheed Martin and NATO. The discussions focused on the challenges facing NATO with the current economic crisis and the ever-changing global security paradigm. The SDA is pleased to present the principal conclusions of the conference in this report.

Central Europe to create a joint combat unit
Defence ministers from the Czech republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia signed a joint statement on May 4, pledging to create a 3000-strong combat unit for EU forces by early 2016. The unit, to be commanded by Poland, is set to have its first training in late 2015.

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) on April 17th released a major data set on world military expenditure for 2011 as a pre-launch of its annual report, to be published in June 2012. The global expenses amounted to $ 1.74 trillion.

Indian missile Agni V test
India successfully completed on Thursday 19th a test flight of the Agni V, a long-range intercontinental ballistic missile. The missile hit its target in the Indian Ocean in 20 minutes. "It has met all the mission objectives," SP Dash, director of the test range, told Reuters, "It hit the target with very good accuracy."
