US to continue drone strikes in Pakistan

The latest drone strike in North Waziristan, Pakistan’s tribal area on the border with Afghanistan, killed 15 suspected militants, of which two were foreigners, Pakistani officials informed, saying the strike further fuelled anti-US sentiments and claimed civilian casualties.

The drone programme, which has become a source of tensions between the two countries after 24 Pakistani soldiers died in an airstrike in November last year, leading to the closure of supply routes, is seen as a way to combat at-Qaida and Taliban fighters who use the border area as a base for attacks against American and NATO forces in Afghanistan.

The latest strike was the seventh in a span of less than two weeks, complicating the efforts for the US and Pakistan to reopen the supply routes considered vital to the planned withdrawal of most foreign combat troops from Afghanistan before the end of 2014.
