Cyber war on the Philippines

27/04/2012
The past week saw the start of multiple cyber attacks in the Philippine websites.
Different government domains have been probed and forced to shut down, including President Benigno Aquino’s website and a state university website.
Budget Secretary Florencio Abad said his agency’s website has already been defaced several times. The hackers behind these attacks appear to be of Chinese origin as Roy Espiritu, the spokesman of the government’s information technology office said “The signatures (of the hackers) indicate they are from Chinese networks.” It was however admitted that this could be a ploy, part of an attempt to increase tensions between the two countries, and the attacks may have other sources.

The standoff between 8 Chinese vessels and a Philippine warship in the South China Sea on April 8th was caused by a sovereignty dispute and is now on its 14th day. In at least one of the recent cyber attacks a message was left to support China’s claim to the South China Sea.

Firewall procedures have already been implemented to counter the attacks and the information technology office is now working with law-enforcement agencies to complete the investigations. Espiritu also invited local Philippino hackers to cease responding, saying “We would like to request them to be the bigger man and not escalate the situation.”
