Turkey will buy 100 F-35 Joint Strike Fighters, Turkish Defence Minister Ismet Yilmaz officially confirmed to reporters of the Turkish daily Milliyet. “As of today the total amount which will be paid under the project is envisaged to be around $16 billion,” he said, adding that the level of future plane orders will be considered in the light of ongoing negotiations. Turkey's payments so far in the development phases of the F-35 project total $315 million. The two first aircraft are to be delivered by 2015. The programme will replace Turkey’s aging F-4 and F-16 fleets.
