Giles Merritt on impact of new US strategy

SDA Director Giles Merritt commented on the implications of the recent US defence strategy for Europe in the Voice of America. The release of the new strategy by US President Barack Obama in January has triggered a debate about the future of US military presence in Europe. The strategy mainly builds on a change of focus towards the Asia-Pacific region and a reduction of Europe-based troops. This has sparked a debate on the consequences for European security. Merritt expressed his concern about the European influence in Washington D.C. “I think the Europeans see their interest as really remaining as close to the Americans as possible in order to be a restraining influence if nothing else. We must try and make US decision-making much more multi-lateral than it has been,” he said.
